A freezing process, not a storage room

Spiral Freezers for Food Processing

A spiral freezer must be reviewed with the actual product, infeed state, throughput, dwell time, conveyor arrangement, cleaning process and supporting refrigeration duty.

01

Connect product flow to the freezer

Spiral freezing is a timed production process. Product type, piece or pack geometry, coating, spacing, infeed temperature, required outfeed condition, line rate and dwell time all affect the review. It should not be presented as suitable for every IQF or prepared-food application without those details.

The infeed and outfeed arrangement needs to fit the product handling line and the building layout. The freezer is also connected to the refrigeration cold source, defrosting, controls, drainage, electrical supply and maintenance access.

02

Plan cleaning and operating access

Food-processing equipment may need defined cleaning procedures, drainage, sanitation access, maintenance clearance and safe handling around the conveyor. These requirements should be coordinated with the process, construction and installation parties rather than left to an afterthought.

Production shifts and cleaning windows influence the operating profile. They need to be considered with the supporting refrigeration system and any downtime planning.

03

Do not substitute storage capacity for freezing throughput

A frozen-storage room may be part of the same project, but it maintains product after freezing. The freezer duty is driven by product mass through the process and the required temperature transition. Both numbers are useful, but they answer different questions.

Questions to discuss

Frequently asked questions

Is a spiral freezer automatically suitable for all IQF products?

No. Product form, handling, line rate, dwell time and cleaning requirements need project-specific review.

Can freezer throughput be treated as storage capacity?

No. Throughput is process flow; storage capacity is inventory. They should be recorded separately.
